Hi all. Normally I get very few listeners. About 10 during the weekdays when people are at work and maybe 5 or 6 on average on the weekends. No big deal, it's a hobby.

Recently those numbers jumped to around 40 on average and on May 5th I hit 243. I'll say that again: 243. (My previous record listener number was 14.) I find this strange especially since I'm no longer on TuneIn.

I'm doing no promotion outside the occasional posts on social media. I find it hard to believe these number are legitimate. I normally stream live (running StationPlaylist Studio) but after noticing the huge jump I disconnected my stream just to see what would happen. I'm experiencing the same type of number running off the Radionomy server.

I'd appreciate your thoughts. Thanks!

Scott

Hi - I've had the same experience, and after a few days it settled back to normal. No one seems to know why it happens.

Some think there are "listening clubs" that like to try out a new station for a while and then move on. Others think it happens when your station gets picked by Radionomy to fill in for some other stream whose owner has failed to update planning. Another theory is that one of the webradio directories might have made you a featured station on its home page for a few days.

But my own belief is that it's some kind of bot activity. I can't say what purpose it could possibly serve, but that's true of a lot of bot activity.

Anyway it doesn't do any harm -- except to set you up for disappointment when the mystery wave of listeners washes away. In my case, it raised my 30-day-average TLH to a nice healthy level, but once that surge was more than 30 days past, it settled back to normal.

Thanks for the input. I'll keep an eye on it (obviously) and report back. Thanks again.

I think you're right. Bot activity is one of the downsides of streaming on port 80.

Hey gang. Since my original post, I've had 2 more instances of listener numbers spiking up to more than 240. Then, as predicted, is slowly goes back down to my normal levels (10-20).

This activity has raised my hours per day up over 400. I know it will go back down but like I told my partner if we get one or two of these spikes a month we'll easily meet the 130 hr/day threshold by 9 months. *fingers crossed*
