That sounds good; much needed. I'll keep that in mind.
So far this afternoon I'm leaning toward Torontocast. They had good comments on their Facebook page. Sonixcast had quite a few unhappy campers.

I'm having a great time uploading to TorontoCast today. I like that I can have two stations (or more) in one account for a combined price. The interface is clean and snappy, uploads complete in a flash. After two days of playing with SonixCast, my personal opinion is it's a total basket case, UI-wise and performance-wise. I figure at least 200 hours of uploading to SonixCast at the rate I've seen on two different days, vs. a few hours on TorontoCast.

I'll probably continue my hobby on TorontoCast.

So, Torontocast licensing covers Canadian listeners. What about U.S. listeners? Or anywhere else for that matter?

I guess I need to do some more homework. Last I heard, SOCAN had reciprocal arrangements with other PROs. I know TorontoCast geoblocked the US for a short time earlier this year based on a disagreement with SoundExchange, but said they would try to work it out, and the geoblock was lifted shortly thereafter. I can’t find anything that says TorontoCast doesn’t cover all licensing. If there is such an issue, then I guess I’m going dark. The big guys won the war.

I asked (emailed) Torontocast about licensing for listeners outside of Canada. As soon as I hear from them, I'll post.

Yeah, I did the same. It’s as clear as mud. Some deep searching has turned up nothing more than “some countries may require additional licensing”, but no details about what that means, where, how, or by whom. Sounds like the situation can be summed up as, “it doesn’t matter where the stream or content originates, if it can be listened to in our country you owe us.” All 195 countries. Separately. And if there are multiple PROs in a country, all of them. I’m all for paying the artists, but the current scheme, or lack thereof, is impossible.

It occurred to me that. if there were a way to get an 'implied' permission from every artist played on my station, to waive royalties from this stream. I could post a message on the website saying as much, and would remove their music if I received a complaint..

You're both over-thinking this.

Torontocast stations belong to Torontocast. They are streaming them. All you do is supply them with programming. They have to license their use of the material you provide. The same holds true for Radionomy and their stations. Radionomy even calls you a "Producer", not a "Broadcaster". If the PROs want more money they go to Torontocast or Radionomy, not you. That sometimes results in geoblocking, as we've seen.

The way that you can get into trouble with the PROs is by putting a player on your own personal webpage. The PROs, at least those in the US, don't license streams. They license websites that play music. That's why Radionomy provides the god-awful "playtheradio.com" pages and Torontocast provides a "mystation.torontocast.stream" website for your player(s). The Torontocast page looks good and seems very flexible. (See http://celticradio.torontocast.stream/. Still a work in progress; not everything works.)

It looks like you're using SAM to send the same stream to multiple services at the same time. Which service are you using for TuneIn and your Nobex widget?

Also, does either SonixCast or TorontoCast use your embedded album art in their players? It appears Live365 pulls the album art from an on-line database not what's embedded in each file.

Thanks in advance for the help.

Yes, I use 3 encoders in SAM, each going to a separate service. Note: this is not relaying which is against the rules, it is three separate streams going in 3 different directions.

My Tunein link points to SonixCast and my Nobex link points to TorontoCast.

SonixCast doesn't send the album art to it's players as far as I know, at least I've never observed it. TorontoCast displays album art from the music files you have uploaded to their servers, but does not display the album art sent to it live from SAM.

Thanks. Good to know. I will start loading album art into the files I have before uploading. I'm pretty much decided on TorontoCast.
