I've had my station up for 4 months and I'm struggling to hit the 130 hrs per day mark. Once I hit that mark and Radionomy adds me to I-tunes should I expect a little bump in listenership?

I don't have a website yet, but I'm working on it. Should that help as well?

What is the most popular way radionomy programmers gain listeners?

Thank you for any feedback.

I have operated another Internet station outside the Radionomy platform for 7 years now. When that station first became listed in iTunes, we had a very negligible bump in listenership, but nothing that benefited us in the long run.

There are two reasons why I believe that being listed in iTunes is not really a significant thing. First, iTunes has relegated all Internet radio stations to a hidden "Internet" button that must first be activated in the settings in order to be visible in the player. This makes sense for them, as they now want listeners tuning into their own music streaming service (what they now call their "radio" service) that generates revenue for them, rather than the free services available via the Internet directory.

Secondly, the categories of stations in the Internet directory in iTunes are too broad to be of any great use. Our Americana/Folk formatted station was placed in iTunes in the "Eclectic" category, along with about 800+ other stations playing music ranging from New Age to College Rock, Alternative and even Techno. Listings are by name alphabetically, and we show up around 250th place, behind stations with names that start off with "A-1," "AA," "AAA," etc. It's interesting that, when you submit listings to iTunes they reply back with a form email that includes a warning that stations with names that are designed to place them at the top of a directory will not be listed, however each category has dozens of stations listed in just that manner.

Having said all of that, it never hurts to be listed and promoted in any place that you can get, and when it doesn't cost anything to be there, it certainly is a good thing. However, once my Radionomy station becomes a part of the iTunes directory, I'm not really expecting any significant bump in listenership (I'd LOVE to be proven wrong, however!)

I would be interested in hearing from anyone whose experience has been different. If you have had better experience with being listed on iTunes, please let us know what category your station is listed on there, and how it has affected your stats!

For me and my stations getting listed in the iTunes Directory was a huge benefit to me. My core listeners are from Japan and they love their Apple products. They have been using Apple products in large numbers for many years and most know where to look for their internet stations.

But, as the previous poster noted, not every music type or audience will benefit with a large gain in number of listeners. I get 50% of my listeners from iTunes/iOS and another 35% from Tunein. The remainder come to my website or use my mobile apps. For me iTunes listing is big followed by Tunein.

Hi - is it acceptable for a station to submit to iTunes directly or do we need to wait for Radionomy to do it for us?

This page contains submission instructions:

http://radio.fiatlux.tk/ressources/how-to-submit-an-internet-radio-station-to-itunes-radio-updated-guidelines

But states: "If you are a Radionomy station, make your iTunes submission by emailing iTunes@radionomy.com."

Thanks for your help :-)

Hello,

A Radionomy station is listed on iTunes when it reaches an average audience of 130 hours/day. You have nothing to do, it is an automatic process twice a month.
